Student debts could hurt the housing market
« on: July 18, 2011, 09:04:07 am »
Due to debts of around £40,000, the current generation of university graduates will not be buying a house until they are around 43.
Many of those considering a university education would be better of financially and educationally, studying for their degrees in the US
where the average debt after a four-year BA course is only £15,000.

With the way the economy and inflation are going, student debts at the interest rates charged are being subsidised by the taxpayer.
That is always assuming graduates can get jobs that pay enough over the threshold that repayments kick in.
I think most students will view their student debt as a minor detail in their lives, most of them never repaying it all.

Did you know the average student debt reduces your borrowing power by up to £30,000!

Interesting statistic FTB.  Where did you hear this?
It seems so obvious,  I am surprised it was not brought up during the University fees issue.

Student debt will seriously affect the first time buyer market

Unless you have rich parents ...then its reckoned by the pundits that the average first time buyer age will rise to the late thirty somethings

It stands to reason if they have to pay rent and then £30k worth of student loan ...even at cheap rates

Student debt is a real shame.
It really isnt worth doing a degree anymore because of the debt levels you will have.
This, and the fact that there arent many real jobs for graduates anyway.
That said it is one hell of an experience and the memories of your student days will live with you forever.
