Cut foreign aid not British jobs
« on: October 23, 2012, 09:19:57 am »
It is time to stop all but humanitarian overseas aid.
Britain currently spends around £8.57bn on foreign aid.
In 2005 at the G8 meeting,Tony Blair pledged to increase overseas aid spending to 0.7% of GDP by 2015.

David Cameron has not only stuck to this commitment, he has even promised to reach it TWO YEARS EARLY!
Britain now gives more in overseas aid than any other G20 country - Germany gives 0.4% of GDP and the US just 0.2% of their GDP.

UK Aid to India is finally being cut, but not stopped.

Justine Greening, the International Development Secretary, is to announce plans to cut Britain's £280 million annual aid budget to India.
And about time too!
Britain currently spends £8.57 billion a year on overseas aid.
This is MORE than the net cost to the UK for being in the EU.
The aid budget is due to INCREASE to £12.6 billion a year by 2014, more than £12.1 million the UK spends on police forces!

However, it is believed that Ms Greening will only divert the money that would have been sent to India to poorer countries, rather than cut the overall aid budget.
More critically, the plans will only reduce India's UK taxpayer-funded windfall by 50%, not stop aid to India altogether!

India is spending £52 million on sending a probe the Mars.
It is the tenth largest world economy.
The Indian president, Pranab Mukherjee said that UK aid payments to India were "a peanut in our total development."
And our goverment is still intending to give aid to India?

With around 200,000 people in the UK using foodbanks because they cannot afford to feed themselves, money should be earmarked for use in this country.

It is high time the government stopped spraying around UK taxpayer's money in the developing world.
Whilst at the same time telling us we need to cut this and cut that because we cannot "afford" it.
