Most people (66%) think crime rates go up during a recession.
However the figures show that crime rates actually fall during a recession and that the level of crime is now at its lowest rate since 1981.
It is thought that in boom times there are more goods that are attractive to criminals and in a recession fewer homes are empty during the day.
