Gap in Brickwork

Is it normal to have a gap between the Brick and the metal flashing for both windows and doors. I know that there is an air gap between the brickwork and the internal walls and wondered if this was why there was a gap as I would assume it aids circulation.

I have looked other builds the builds on the estate and most are the same although however I did that a couple of the builds did have pointing on a couple of their windows on the front

The metal is a galvanised steel lintel not a flashing.
It supports the brickwork and blockwork above the openings.
It should be fully bedded on the brickwork.
I would hope it is just a bit of pointing that has fallen out or been missed.
The gap should not be there at all and is not for ventilation. Cavities are normally filled with insulation anyway except in timber frame, which cavities are required to be ventilated but not like this!
