The NHBC's go to expert, Barry Haseltine
« on: June 12, 2018, 04:04:01 pm »
Hi all

Does anyone have experience of this chap.

We are suffering from weak mortar, not only weak but it appears adulterated and mixed with more sand etc at the actual house build sites.

The NHBC are passing on our mortar testing analysis which are all demonstrating IV, V and several results completely off the scale at the weak end, along with two separate structural engineers saying our homes need repointing due to inadequate mortar and erosion.

Can anyone write the script on what is likely to come back from Barry Haseltine.  I believe he works with the NHBC and the builders on a regular basis so I am a bit sceptical of his independance.

Thanks in advance.

Sheila

You are right to be wary of the NHBC's go to "expert" on weak mortar and his independence.
His report will favour the NHBC's opinion and will entail minimal if any remedial works of no more than a 25mm deep re point using a stronger mortar.

Here is some essential reading on weak mix mortar , causes and what should be done about it.
