Title: New home garden advice

Advice for new home owners with regards to gardens and what to do with the blank canvas

1. Dont rush into anything ...see how your garden works
2. Pick your season ....no point in mud humping or trying to dig frozen ground
3. See where the sun gets to ...and more importantly doesnt get to ...
4. Do not turf directly up to the fence or the house.
5. What is your soil type?
6. Do not plant trees to close to the house or garage or boundary wall
7. Avoid creepers on your walls ....yes they look nice ....or keep them well under control
8. Think about how you live your life
9. A billiard table lawn doesnt happen over night ...it takes a lot of effort

Has anyone got anything else to add ?

Good points.
A nice lawn does take a lot of work.  I am off to do my edges in a minute!

I did my new home garden in the spring after I moved in (September)

That way all the weeds that were going to come up showed themselves.

I bought the best lawn turf Rolawn but it all died in the winter as the leather-jackets killed it.

A good tip is to buy cheaper smaller plants and wait for them to grow into big plants - you have the time.

It is not just your own house, but also if you plant trees near a neighbouring property
and the roots affect that property, you could be liable for any damage  repairs if your tree roots caused the problem.

My neighbour always throws the overhanging branches he cuts off from our trees back over the fence.
I suppose legally he has to as they "belong" to us,  but it is a bit unsociable.

A 'blank canvass' new home rear garden needs a lot of careful planning and thought.

A rear garden in a new home  does not only need careful planning, but a lot of hard work and expense too!

Good point Jassica, it is a good idea to check the soil type and ph and maybe add some soil improvement before starting out.
