Lack of rain killing my lawn

Apart from regularly watering, does anyone have any tips on how I can keep my lawn alive during this drought.
I live in the South East and it hasnt rained for weeks.
Is  fertiliser a good idea?

I try to only water the lawn once a week as it costs too much because we are on a water meter.  (About £2.60 per m3)

Greenfinger:
It is always a good idea to keep the cut height at no lower than 25mm. 
Do not shave the lawn.

If you water once a week it will keep alive.

You would be surpirsed to see how little water the grass needs to stay green.
No need to leave sprinklers on for hours on end imo.

I have fought this as well because we have a really wet spring and then a dry summer.  I do keep my lawn mowed at a good height.  However, a little water does go along way.  I also always try and mow the yard the day before it rains to capitalize on the upcoming rain as much as possible.  I have thought about some sort of watering system, but like you, I am on a water meter.  I'm thinking about looking online, to see if I can find someone to give me an estimate of a very basic system.  I'm thinking about just doing the front and sides and not the large backyard.

Have you thought about a system that uses stored rainwater from a water butt or something. 
All my water goes to a soakaway which could be converted to a tank of sorts with perhaps a pump in it.

Will the cost of electricity for the pump be more than the water cost from the mains though.
