JustGiving? JustTaking would be more accurate!
This is a warning for anyone aiming to raise money for charity, running in the London Marathon etc and jolly good luck to you.
However, if you use JustGiving you are not giving your chosen charity the best opportunity to receive the most from those who make a donation.
Fundraisers who uses the mis-named JustGiving platform for fundraising are throwing away 6.25% of each donation. It gets worse! In addition, the JustGiving website is charging you £18 a month too which could also go to your charity.
A better name for this fundraising platform would be "Just Taking!"
As an example, if you are looking to raise £5,000, (£6,000 with Gift Aid) Just Giving will be taking £375 plus card fees and a further £90 from you in monthly charges! You are effectively wasting £465 that otherwise, your charity would received if you had used BT's MyDonate instead which is FREE with 0% commission and no set up or monthly fees!
Using JustGiving is the most COSTLY way to raise money for charity. (See graphic below!) It is the most popular fund-raising website and took a staggering £20million in commission from the £440million donated through the website in 2016. Its boss was paid £200,000 and staff wages averaged £60,000 per employee!
JustGiving was set up in 2001 by Zarine Kharas and Marie Huby.
A current appeal on the privately-owned JustGiving website has raised £292,000 for a two-year-old girl who needs cancer treatment. JustGiving will take over £18,000 of it. Yes, disgusting isn't it?
Their justification?
JustGiving say "We help good causes raise more money precisely because we make a profit."
Remember, whilst JustGiving might state it takes 5% cent of your donation, it works out more because, unlike other providers, the percentage is calculated after including a Gift Aid tax rebate.
So everyone, good luck with your fundraising efforts.
But please use BT’s MyDonate platform to make the most of the donations you receive.

BT have announced it is to close its free charitable giving service from June 2019.
The good news is Virgin Money Giving (https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving/faqs/fundraisers/) is waiving its £150 joining fee and is now free.
So there is still no need to use JustGiving which just takes!
