Greed and Money mean no place for loyalty in Football
« on: October 15, 2011, 12:10:53 pm »
Yesterday we had confirmation of the appointment of Steve Cotterill as the new Nottingham Forest manager. This after a week of soul-searching and speculation. We heard how Mr Cotterill spouted the usual “it is a very sad day for me" as he drove his 61 plate Mercedes to the club car park to say his "goodbyes" to the "fantastic players and staff at the club". But despite all these people that Mr Cotterill says mean a lot to him, including the Portsmouth supporters, he prostituted himself in the managerial merry-go-round that threatens to destroy the game itself.

Have Forest made a wise move?  The answer probably not.
Steve McClaren who he replaces, was fairly successful at Middlesborough, winning the League Cup in 2004 and taking them the final of the UEFA Cup in 2006. He also won the Dutch league with FC Twente in 2010, after being sacked as England manager. A respectable record.

In comparison, Cotterill's chequered managerial career is one of a journeyman. He joined non-league Cheltenham in 1992 reaching the League 2000 and League 1 via the play-offs in 2002. He moved to Stoke City in 2002 where he lasted 13 games. He left to join Sunderland as assistant manager but was sacked after 20 games following relegation from the Premiership. He then had 3 uneventful years at Burnley before he left "by mutual consent" after a run of poor results. In 2010 he was appointed at Notts County and after 18 games in charge and guiding them to promotion to League 1 he left and to join Portsmouth.

Last year we had Eddie Howe leaving a promotion chasing Bournemouth to join mid table Burnley in the Championship in similar circumstances. Where has the loyalty gone? Why are managers so keen to leave a club where they are valued and join a new club. At least Eddie Howe went up a division.

In swapping Portsmouth for Nottingham Forest, Cotterill has just moved from one club with a run of poor results to another.
Both have won just 2 games scoring 10 goals.  How long will he last at Forest?
