Title: If the work is beyond your DIY skills - Choosing a tradesman advice

A friend of mine recently wanted some plastering done in his house so he got three firms round to give him some quotes - (always a good idea)

One of them (the most expensive) asked if he could say he had done the work on his Check-a-trade application,  even if he didnt get the job!

So there it is, just because they are check-a-trade registered it doesn t necessarily mean they are any good!

These so called trade organisations are just places where those without a reputation can buy one with an annual subscription imo.

I think that you are going to have this in any service provider, not just contractors. I think that the rise of online platforms for businesses, such as yellow pages has made it better for the consumer.  On the BBB, you only see complaints.  I think you are right that they can get affiliated with being "proven," but that doesn't guarantee that they will keep that status.

I agree, once they have joined a trade organisation as long as they keep up the subscription payments they stay registered even though their standards may fall.

Mind you if you see complaints on the internet, these are the firms to avoid!

Why would a good tradesman with a good local reputation need to PAY someone like Check-a-trade for a listing.
All you need for a successful company is satisfied customers!

I bet Pimilco Plumbers  arent on check-a-trade!  - In fact they arent I just "checked"  QED
