For example a person earning £60,000 a year buying a pair of £40 shoes, would have to earn £82, with 59% of this going in tax of one sort or another.

Around 33% is spent on welfare with a further 17% on health. 6% goes towards defence, 5% on "recreation culture and religion", and 2% on administering the government - all those MP's salaries and expense claims.
